Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced on Wednesday that Nestlé Purina Pet Care, a pet food and product manufacturer, is advancing a $128 million project to expand its cat litter production plant in King William County, Virginia The scale and production capacity to cope with the growing consumer demand.

During the effort, the company stated that it will build 138,000 square feet of space to increase the site's capacity and "strengthen business operations" to produce Tidy Cats cat litter products, including LightWeight formulas like Free & Clean Unscented. The facility will also add 100,000 square feet of warehouse space to improve logistics management and delivery capabilities.

Purina Plant Manager Travis Gumbs said in a press release: "The investment in Virginia provides an exciting opportunity to strengthen our business in King William." Prior to Nestlé Purina's decision to invest in Virginia, Governor Northam attended a meeting with the company's CEO and Nestlé's Swiss headquarters as part of the European international marketing mission in May.

Work on the facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

The expansion announcement was made after the production capacity of other major cat litter facility projects in recent years.
